Pedestrian safety is everyone's responsibility

Pedestrian safety has to be a priority for pedestrians and motorists because the types of injuries that can result from a car slamming into a person walking can lead to death or permanent disability. There are several things that people must think about when they are trying to make sure that everyone can make it home to their family members at the end of the day.

One thing to remember is that pedestrians do have the right of way at crosswalks, but this doesn't mean that they should cross when it obviously isn't safe. Sometimes, you have put your safety before trying to cross the street just because cars should stop. At the same time, motorists should be watching for people who are going to cross the street and drive in a way that allows them to stop when they need to.

Another thing to remember is that sobriety matters on both sides. You obviously don't want intoxicated drivers on the road. You also don't want intoxicated individuals walking around. People who are intoxicated tend to not make good decisions and might misjudge how much distance is between a vehicle and a crosswalk.

Everyone must obey the laws, whether they are pedestrians or motorists. This is another way that everyone can remain safe. For pedestrians, each trip away from home is one in which they are placing their safety in other people's hands. If a pedestrian is hit, it is imperative that they get medical care right away since you never know what kinds of injuries are hidden. Those injured pedestrians might choose to seek compensation for their injuries.
