Motorists must protect motorcyclists

Many motorcyclists enjoy San Diego's wonderful weather because they can ride all year long. However, some still put their motorcycles away until the warmer months arrive.

No matter which camp you are in, now is the time to brush up on your motorcycle skills if you are planning on heading out this summer.

Motorists should also take the time to remember that watching for motorcycles is crucial. Cars slamming into a motorcycle can maim or kill the rider or passenger. This could mean that a parent doesn't go home to the children. Even non-fatal motorcycle collisions can render the parent who returns in a very different condition than when he or she left.

Limited ability to prevent accidents

Sadly, the ability for bikers to remain safe isn't all in their own hands. In two-thirds of the motorcycle accidents that involve other vehicles, the four-wheel drivers were found responsible because those drivers didn't respect the right of way of the motorcyclists.

Motorcyclists face increased risk

Motorcycle riders face an increased risk of death and injury. They are five times more likely than others on the road to be injured in a crash. They are 26 times more likely to die in a crash. Those harrowing statistics indicate why motorists must be cautious and watch out for motorcyclists.

If you are an injured motorcyclist or the family member of a motorcyclist who was in a fatal accident with another at-fault driver, you might opt to seek compensation for the crash. Learning how to do this can help you to decide how to proceed.
