Particularly in high tourism areas, such as near theme parks and the beaches, pedestrians commonly share San Diego roads with motorists. Unfortunately, recklessness, distraction and negligence often lead to pedestrian accidents. While much of the responsibility lies with drivers, there are things that pedestrians can do to help avoid being involved in accidents with motor vehicles.
Like drivers, pedestrians should pay attention to traffic signs, signals and markings. Most people are aware that it is important for pedestrians to use crosswalks when crossing the street. However, it is also vital for pedestrians to only cross when they have a walk signal, or the right of way. Furthermore, it can be helpful to avoid rushing to cross the street if a walk signal is close to changing to stop.
Even when walking on the sidewalk, it is generally advisable that pedestrians are alert. This includes watching for speeding motorists, or those that are driving erratically. Just as we are taught as children, pedestrians should always look both ways before crossing the street. Being alert may help pedestrians avoid vehicles that do not have time, or neglect, to fully stop at a stop sign or red light.
Sometimes, it can be more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians at night. By wearing clothing that is light or brightly colored, pedestrians may help motorists to see them better. Additionally, it can be helpful for pedestrians to carry flashlights or wear clothing that is reflective.
Not all pedestrian accidents are avoidable. However, taking precautions can help people to ensure their safety while they are walking.
