5 types of TBIs that can come from car crashes

On Behalf of | Apr 1, 2020 | Car Accidents |

Car crashes can happen in a split second. It only takes one lapse in judgment for two parties to wind up on the side of the road with totaled vehicles and a sense of uncertainty. For many in these collisions, if they’re not bleeding or crushed by the car, they may assume they don’t have any severe injuries. But depending on the circumstances, some don’t always show up right away. That’s especially the case for traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

According to Mayo Clinic, TBIs typically occur when people experience a mild or extreme blow to the head.

TBIs victims could get in a car crash

These are a few of the most common:

  • Concussion: These TBIs are common and typically mild. A concussion usually occurs when trauma to the head causes the brain to shake. Even if the victim’s airbags go off, getting a concussion is still possible.
  • Diffuse Axonal Injury: Much like a concussion, axonal injuries cause the head to shake. However, these TBIs can make the head shake so violently that it tears the brain’s nerve tissue. This can disrupt the brain’s usual communication and chemical processes. Unfortunately, these types of injuries can result in permanent brain damage or even death.
  • Brain Contusion: A contusion occurs when the brain hits part of the skull, causing it to bruise and bleed. If victims receive a contusion, they will want to seek medical attention, as brain bruises usually require surgery.
  • Coup-Countercoup: This type of contusion can affect both sides of the brain. Not only can a Coup-Countercoup damage the site of impact, but it can also cause the brain to slam into the opposite side of the skull.
  • Penetration: This TBI can be fatal, as it stems from blunt objects penetrating the skull. What makes these damages so challenging to treat is that removing the object that went through the head may only exacerbate the injury.

TBIs can lead to emotional and financial suffering

TBIs can affect more than just car crash victims. If the victim provides for their household, their families could lose a substantial portion of their income on top of expensive medical bills. While people rely on insurance companies to get them through these tough times, they don’t always act in good faith. If that’s the case, victims can contact a trusted legal partner who can get them the compensation they deserve.
