With Halloween just around the corner, some parents will start doing fall activities with their children. Many of these activities will involve the children being outdoors and around vehicles. It is imperative that drivers take the time to remember that kids don’t have the same comprehension skills and safety understanding that adults have.
There are several things that parents can do to help encourage their children to behave in safe manners. Some of these start before you even leave home. You should choose a safe costume for the children so that they are easy for motorists to see. Make sure the children can see out of the eye holes of the costume and that they can breathe even if they have the mask on.
If you are taking your children trick-or-treating, make sure that you are watching them closely. Having a flashlight might help motorists to see you while you are on the trail. Be sure that your kids cross the street in established crosswalks.
Never assume that a vehicle is going to yield the right of way to you while you are walking. There is always a chance that the driver doesn’t see you or won’t stop for you. Even if you do have the right of way, it might be best to allow a car to pass so that no one in your group is hit by the car.
If you or your child is struck by a car during the Halloween season, you might opt to take legal action against the driver. This may help you recover money that you’ve had to spend on medical care and other related expenses.
