Motorcyclists should be extra careful on autumn rides

Motorcycle safety is a priority for all the riders who enjoy getting out on the open road. For the men and women who are going to ride this fall, remembering some of the unique challenges of the season might be beneficial.

One major hazard during the autumn is wildlife, particularly deer. As they are moving about to prepare for the winter, they might cross roads and travel near them. This poses a risk to motorcycle riders since a wreck with an animal is likely going to devastate the rider. There is a chance that the motorcyclist might swerve into another vehicle or lose control of the motorcycle while trying to get away from the animal.

Another danger is leaves on the roadway. These can reduce the traction between the tires and the road. When dew or rain is on the leaves, they become even slicker. This can throw the motorcycle off kilter or cause you to skid.

The cooler nights might also be a problem. Remember that the temperatures you feel while you ride are much cooler than what you feel sitting still. Be sure to protect your hands, legs and face. Wearing motorcycle gloves can help keep your fingers warm, which can make it easier to control the steering and other controls on the handlebars.

You also need to be more vigilant about watching for other drivers. They might mistakenly think that motorcycles have been put away for the season. If you are struck by another driver, you might need medical care and may opt to seek compensation for the damages.
