One of the first things that you might think when a driver runs into you is “I hope he has good insurance.” Unfortunately, some drivers don’t have insurance at all, which can make your heart drop. There are some specific things that you need to do if you are struck by a driver who doesn’t have insurance at all or who has inadequate coverage.

First, make sure that you call the police to get a report made. You should also get all of the information you can from the other driver. You might find that drivers who don’t have at least the state minimum coverage might be unwilling to share their information with you. This is why contacting the police is so important.

Second, review your insurance policy to determine if you have coverage for uninsured and underinsured motorists. This coverage comes at an additional cost when you get insurance, but it can be well worth it if you are struck by one of these drivers.

Third, find out if any of your insurance coverage will handle any of the damages you suffered. You might be able to minimize the amount you have to come out-of-pocket by getting in contact with your insurance.

We understand that you might feel that you are going to be stuck having to cover the costs of the accident. This might not be the case. You might opt to seek compensation from the driver through a personal injury lawsuit that you file in civil court. It might be challenging, but it could help you to reduce the costs you have to swallow for the accident.
