International tourism is a major source of income for cities like San Diego and others around the country. Visitors come from all around the world to take in the sights and get a taste of the local culture. Healthy tourism often translates to increased motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic, however, and increased accident rates in some instances. One tourist was recently involved in a major pedestrian accident that left her permanently disabled. Now, she is attempting to hold the city is responsible for its alleged role in the incident.
The 24-year-old woman involved in the serious New York taxicab accident was visiting from Britain. She was reportedly standing on the sidewalk when the taxi struck her after first colliding with a bicycle. Due to the severity of the injuries she sustained in the accident, the woman’s left leg was amputated.
The pedestrian accident victim and her family were reportedly disappointed over the decision made by the New York City District Attorney to not charge the taxicab driver with any criminal accusations. Now, she is arguing that the city failed to suspend the taxicab driver’s license before the accident happened, therefore contributing to the incident.
A malfunction in the computer system of the Taxi and Limousine Commission allegedly resulted in thousands of drivers licenses remaining active even though they should have been suspended. The plaintiff in a lawsuit claims that the license of the taxi driver should have been one of those suspended since it had several violations against it.
Since the city allegedly failed to do its job to keep the taxi driver off the road, it is being sued for almost $30 million.
