San Diego neighbors fear pit bull attacks

It is common for people to feel threatened by or afraid of dogs, especially ones with which they aren't familiar. In San Diego, both pet owners and individuals have a role to play in preventing a dog bite or attack. It is important to know how to act around any animal, whether you are familiar with it or not.

An animal that has bitten or attacked a human can create paranoia - especially in a neighborhood with small children. Such is the case in one Serra Mesa community. According to the San Diego County Department of Animal Services, there is little they can do unless an officer witnesses an attack. That being the case, many families in the neighborhood feel that their calls for euthanizing the pet are going unanswered.

In the last six weeks, a pit bull allegedly made several attacks. It is unclear whether the attacks were against people or pets, but one victim had a scarred hand. In another instance, a neighbor had to pry the dog off another dog during an attack. While the neighbors feel this is a pattern of aggressive behavior, Animal Services says it isn't enough to put down the pit bull.

An animal bite can lead to personal injury and illness, especially if the pet is not up to date on their rabies vaccine. This can lead to hospitalization and costly medical bills. Additionally, victims of a dog attack can suffer emotional scarring that can last a lifetime. For these reasons, someone who has suffered an attack may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses and other costs. In Serra Mesa, families say it is just a matter of time before the next attack.
